Fortnite The Game

Over the weekend I decided to pick up and play a game on my PS4 called Fortnite, due to its rising and buzz its received within the gaming community. Fortnite is a partial free-to-play, mass co-op (can feature up to 100 players) survival based third-person shooter developed and published by Epic Games. Fortnite has followed the trend of survival/battle royale games that have emerged and gained popularity over the past year. However, Fortnite differs from other games such as Playerunknown’s Battleground and H1Z1 through its gameplay and game mechanics. What sets Fortnite apart from these games is the ability within the game to craft and build cover, fortresses, and buildings on the fly. This creates a unique dynamic for people to bring out their creativity to benefit themselves and work further towards their objectives. The graphics of Fortnite are cartoonish and very colorful. Further promoting the need for the players to be creative in game.

The game features both PvE (Player versus Environment) and PvP (Player versus Player) game modes. The PvE, titled “Save the World,” is still in development and must require an access code which must be paid for in order to play it. A full free-to-play game is set to be released in early 2018. The game mode is mission based on the ability to team up with friends in order to accomplish the mission. At the current state of its development, the only missions in PvE are those where the players must build and protect one or more control points from zombie-like creatures. “Save the World” can also feature up to 4 players at a time to complete the missions available.

The other game mode, PvP, Battle Royale is where the game really shines. The Battle Royale game mode can feature up to 100 players at a time and has 3 different variances within the mode. The player can either play by themselves in Solo Battle Royale, play with a friend against other teams in two in Duos Battle Royale, or, play in a squad of friends against other squads in Squad Battle Royale. The ultimate objective of the game mode is to collect weapons and materials and survive until you are the last one standing from the match starting with 100 people.

I spent the past weekend playing the game and for it to be a free game I have to say that Epic Games did an excellent job. The game is fun, intense, fast-paced and has really brought out a sense of creativity and quick thinking within myself that I didn’t think I had. The matchmaking in Fortnite is top notch, seamlessly allowing players to jump in and out of games without much delay. There is hardly any lag and for the game to hold so many 100 player matches on a large map is actually fairly impressive. I played all game modes and had fun with each and every one.

I recommend Fortnite to anyone who has any gaming platform outside of Nintendo consoles. The game is addictive and will bring out the competitive streak within you if you play it. I look forward to future updates and further additions Epic Games will make towards this game.

Have you played this game? If you have what do you think? If not, what’s your holdup? Comment below and thank you for reading.
